North Carolina is trying to lure a computer chip manufacturer to Chatham County that could spend billions of dollars and create nearly 2,000 jobs. A state budget proposal released Tuesday by Republican legislative leaders would spend $112.5 million for a “qualifying project in Chatham County,” providing the state’s Economic Investment Committee awards a job development investment grant, or JDIG. The budget doesn’t say what company legislators may have in mind, but it requires the business “manufacture computer chips at the project site, invest at least ($4.8 billion) in private funds, and create at least 1,800 eligible positions.”

Interestingly enough, I was in Chatham County today, and drove near this site, by the Toyota site, and also near Boom. I looked at my clock and mileage as I passed each. The Siler City site is a hike from Winston - about 60 minutes / 60 miles. Toyota is around 45/45, and Boom of course is around 22 miles / 25 minutes. You can definitely see the work being done on the Toyota site on 421 (and it is only about 15 miles from the Siler City site).

Thanks for the report. I think US 64 should be made into a freeway or interstate from Asheboro to Apex. If US 421 is going to become an interstate because of the Greensboro megasite, 64 should be similarly upgraded.
